Sleep As Protest
How Rest the Brave is the title of the group exhibition that NEST in The Hague is currently hosting. For how do the brave rest in a society where optimisation and commercialisation are central? The days seem too short and the productive hours scarce, but as Roman writer and stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca wrote just after Christ, “The only thing that concerns busy people is the time of now, and it is so short that you cannot grasp it. And even that one thing slips out of their hands because they are busy with all kinds of things at once.”
Soaked and in a reasonable hurry, I arrive at NEST. I wipe the drops from my glasses and steady my breath. The moment the attendant opens the door and I step into the exhibition, a very welcoming feeling overcomes me.
