The world has liquefied according to the influential Polish-UK thinker Zygmunt Bauman (1925-2017). Friendships are fluid and do not last as long, old forms of society are losing strength without new forms having crystallised. Philosopher Florentijn van Rootselaar shows what that fluid world looks like, but he also asks whether it is possible to get past that fluidity. Is there a future possible with new traditions and new forms of coexistence? To answer these questions, Van Rootselaar draws from the conversations he had with Zygmunt Bauman, including when he visited him at home in Leeds.
Florentijn van Rootselaar is a philosopher, journalist and writer. For Filosofie Magazine he spoke with the great thinkers of our time, which resulted in his book Philosophical fieldwork. Nowadays he writes for Trouw about philosophy and ethics and is working on a book about privacy: ‘Secrets in a digital world’. He studied philosophy of art and culture at the University of Amsterdam.
