Hilma af Klint throughout the years

Lecture

On Tuesday 21st of November at 19:00, you are welcome at Nest to a lecture on Hilma af Klint by Laura Stamps. She is conservator of modern and contemporary art at Kunstmuseum Den Haag, and one of the curators of the current exhibition Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian: Forms of Life, which was created in collaboration with Tate Modern.

This evening, Laura Stamps talks more about the reception of Hilma af Klint’s work. Today, Swedish artist Af Klint’s work is more popular than ever. However, the artist has not always known such recognition and certainly not during her lifetime. How has that appreciation developed over time?
The lecture takes as its starting point the 1986 exhibition The Spiritual in Art, Abstract Painting 1890-1985, at the LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), an exhibition on the mystical roots of abstract art. At the time, the then unknown Af Klint was shown alongside such giants as Kandinsky, Mondrian and Malevich, raising many questions. How did Hilma af Klint grow from unknown to now prominence within art history, and into an important reference for many contemporary artists, as the artists in Cycle, Portal, Path show?
