Panel discussion – The Grand Palace of Everyone

  •

On Monday evening 24 April, we would like to invite you to a panel discussion amid the exhibition The Grand Palace of Everyone at Nest. With a panel of five speakers, we will discuss the question: Who decides whether you are ‘professional’ enough to be included in the art world?

Panelists
  • Jan Hoek (Artist and founder of No Limits! Art Castle)
  • Yasmijn Jarram (Curator KM21)
  • Sade Sánchez (Creative supervisor Atelier de Kunstvlieg, The Hague)
  • Brent Wiersma (Artist, participant Atelier de Kunstvlieg, The Hague)
  • Stefanie Van Zal (Inclusion researcher at the lectorate Long-term Care and Support, Hogeschool van Amsterdam)
Moderator
  • Heske ten Cate (artistic director Nest)

During this panel discussion, we will be questioning how inclusive the art world is in terms of artists who, due to various reasons, cannot or hardly participate in the ‘regular’ art circuit, and are only given space in a parallel art world under the label ‘outsider art’. This separation seems to leave a whole group of artists invisible: artists with disabilities, or artists with psychiatric or homeless backgrounds, among others. There are institutions that focus on the visibility of these artists, such as the Art Brut Biennale, Museum of the Mind or No Limits! Art Castle, Jan Hoek’s initiative. But do we only want to have separate art institutions and art studios for this art? Or do we actually need new policies within the existing art and cultural structures? Which structures should be revised for more inclusiveness within presentation institutions, grant schemes, educational opportunities or residencies? What adjustments could contribute to this?

You are welcome to join our guests on Monday evening 24 April for an exchange of views and to come up with concrete advice.
