The Sun Ra Arkestra

  •

Sun Ra is one of the greatest composers of free/improjazz known in the history of music. He was born in Alabama as Herman ‘Sonny’ Poole Blount and stated that he was of the Angels Breed, not of Earth, but of Saturn. He developed his own cosmic style and lyrical poetry, with characteristics of African and African-American theatre, theosophy and Afro-futurism. In February, Nest featured an international group exhibition ‘History is His Story’ about the legacy of Sun Ra. In this light, this year’s Down The Rabbit Hole festival will dedicate its Future Fuzzy Field to inspirator Sun Ra.

To top it all off, the one and only Sun Ra Arkestra will give one legendary performance on 18 May in hospitable Sexyland!

Sun Ra considered his performances to be rituals in which he conjures up non-rational forces, placing himself, his Arkestra and his audience in a new dimension. Sun Ra has since passed away, but in 1995 saxophonist Marshall Allen, friend and band member since the 1950s, took over the leadership of the Arkestra. This year Marshall Allen celebrates his 95th birthday in Sexyland, with you and Sun Ra on Saturnus.

After the Arkestra’s performance JamesZoo and KC The Funkaholic will perform until 03.00 at night.
