Remco Osório Lobato

For Cycle, Portal, Path, multidisciplinary artist Remco Osório Lobato has designed a scenography in which the three main themes take on physical form. In his design, he incorporates the cyclical elements from af Klint’s work into oval spaces that are intercon- nected. For the architecture, he studied the sketches that af Klint made with Den Fem
to create synergy between the works. Den Fem (Swedish for ‘The Five’) was the name
of a group of female artists of which af Klint was a founder and member. The group was interested in spiritualism and regularly held séances. During these gatherings, they received messages from spirits they called “High Masters” and documented these messages in collective notebooks. Af Klint wrote in her notes extensively about a temple in which her work should be presented; she envisioned a round, spiral space that reached towards the sky.

For Osório Lobato, af Klint’s work, such as her series The Ten Largest and the sketches and notes of the temple, provides an inspiring starting point for a physical and immersive experience of the exhibition. He distinguishes between the three themes but ensures interconnectedness through viewpoints and harmony between the spaces. As he puts it, this allows for ‘fluid forms with no interruption, where every energy or movement can flow and search unimpeded.’

Cycle, Portal, Path

This fall, Nest presents Cycle, Portal, Path: an exhibition that examines how the traces left by the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) affect contemporary art 100 years later. Af Klint lived in a time full of developments and scientific turmoil. Scientists studied nature and dealt with phenomena such as atomic fission and X-rays; discoveries that shaped the world and made the invisible visible.

Cycle, Portal, Path shows that Af Klint’s exploration of the relationship between science, nature and spiritual life is as urgent now as it was in her time. The artists in the exhibition relate directly or indirectly to Af Klint and her views and supplement them with contemporary or futuristic ideas. Through meditative drawings and video installations, abstract paintings and AI-generated images, the artists reflect on new technologies, spiritual movements, ecology and the connection between then, now and future generations.

Cycle, Portal, Path was created in conversation with Kunstmuseum Den Haag and KM21, where the exhibitions Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondriaan: Forms of Life and Tai Shani – Our Hieromantic Objects of Love will be on view simultaneously. A diverse context program has been developed for the three exhibitions. Keep an eye on our website for updates.
