Tommy Smits & Laurens Gabriël

Laurens Gabriel is both artist and gamer.
He draws much of his inspiration from fantasy genres and works out characters into ceramics (at gallery and art studio Zinderin Kunst in The Hague) or paintings (at home). In Tommy Smits’ practice sculpture and photography have collided headfirst. One could call him a sculptographer. The photographs he takes during his travels and images from second-hand books end up in monumental concrete sculptures.

Laurens and Tommy were very relaxed about their collaboration. When they became a bit too relaxed the decided to let their hands do the talking, while discussing Dante’s Inferno: the nine layers of hell that each represent a specific sin. Tommy encountered Dante in mythology, Laurens in his games. For one of Lauren’s sculptures, they made a mountain-like plinth that they crafted from enormous ceramic, demonic rings. They worked on this mountain alternately, like playing a game of ping-pong above the pits
of hell.

Tommy and Laurens present their work in a collaborative installation together with Shani Leseman and Iris Luijkenaar

The Grand Palace of Everyone

In collaboration with No Limits! Art Castle

Curator
  • Heske ten Cate & Jan Hoek

Welcome to ‘The Grand Palace of Everyone’, a land without borders where collaboration reigns.

Together with No Limits! Art Castle (formerly known as Outsiderland) we tear down the walls between fantasy and reality, art and design, and ‘insider’ and ‘outsider’ artists. Why would anyone decide who is ‘professional enough’ to enter the gates?

The Grand Palace of Everyonerolls out a black and white carpet for the work of over sixty artists in 26 unique collaborations between talented and dedicated artists. Side by side they find their way in the art world and present a broad scope of collaborations in every nook and cranny of Nest. Never before have so many artists shared the space in one exhibition.
