DVONS: Opening workshop session with Marcos Kueh
Contribute to a monumental tapestry about our provincial history of slavery
- – Upcoming
In June, Nest opens its doors for a unique collective creation process: Draden van ons Nederlandse slavernijverleden. For five days, work will take place in the exhibition space on a monumental wall tapestry that depicts the colonial slavery history of South Holland. From June 23rd to June 27th everyone can collaborate on this project. Read more about this special week at Nest here.
On Monday June 23rd we kick off this week with artist Marcos Kueh, who developed the design for the South Holland tapestry. Marcos will speak about the visual language of his design and the elements of the colonial slavery past that he incorporated: from historical iconography to contemporary reflection.
Martine Gosselink, director of the Mauritshuis, will reflect on the institutional and symbolic legacy of the colonial past. Using the example of Johan Maurits – the museum’s namesake and a key figure in Dutch colonial expansion and slavery – she will address the urgency of re-evaluating museum collections and providing contextual interpretation of their histories.
After the talks, the first stitches will be made on the tapestry. Under Marcos’s guidance, the collective creation process will begin, and all attendees are invited to contribute to this monumental work.
