In the 21st century, more people than ever before are fleeing and migrating all over the world in search of security, freedom and better opportunities. The current debate on migration in Dutch politics is dominated by words such as ‘border control’ and ‘migration deals’ and ignores the complexity of the movement of the individual. More than half of the inhabitants of The Hague have a migration background. They have made The Hague their new home. What is the role of family, descent and family tree in shaping your identity and the feeling of being at home somewhere, even if you are far from home?

In their work, the artists of The bricks that build a home deal with migration, displacement, belonging and colonial history, which has contributed greatly to the current composition of the Dutch population. They often use personal family histories and stories to explore their own identity and their own ‘home’.
