Out and About – Eugenie Boon

What have you been up to in the past year?
“Last year I graduated from the HKU in Utrecht and started my own studio in The Hague. There, I not only make my own art, but I also help starting entrepreneurs with photography and their websites. Because of this, I came into contact with a lot of young people who, just like me, came from Curaçao to the Netherlands. This developed into a confronting research into the duality within subjects such as religion, colonialism, gender, inequality and identity. Through conversations with my parents and grandmother, it became clear to me that some problems are passed on from generation to generation. They need to be addressed in order to tell a complete story, and I want to strengthen my voice through art.”

What are you presenting today?
“With the work ‘At’e Wega!’, I tell this story of dualism that originates from the historical relationship between Curaçao and the Netherlands. Inspired by the game Monopoly, which is full of symbolism about accumulating possessions and making a journey, I make suggestions and question the colonial history of Curaçao. I also created a performance to accompany the work. The work is a starting point and research tool for further research into the political and economic systems that shape the relationship between Curaçao and the Netherlands.”
